Brandon Flowers reveals a new Killers album was scrapped halfway through

He also discussed the band's recent controversy involving inviting a Russian fan onstage in Georgia.

Frontman Brandon Flowers has revealed that The Killers are no longer working on new music, after scrapping a new album halfway through production.

"Halfway through recording I realised, ‘I can’t do this,’" he told The Times. He then expressed a desire to break out of the Killers' sound. "I don’t think you’ll see us making this type of music anymore. This is the crisis I’m in. The Killers are my identity and our songs fill the seats, but I’m more fulfilled making music like Pressure Machine. I found a side of myself writing it that was strong. This was the guy I’d been looking for!"

Pressure Machine is the Killers' most recent album, released in 2021 to critical acclaim. They also recently released a single ahead of their Electric Picnic headlining gig, titled 'Your Side of Town'.

Flowers continued, referencing The Killers' 2004 smash hit. "No matter what, there will always be people who look at me and just think of 'Somebody Told Me'. And I get that. But I’m interested in evolving.”

The Killers have been busy with a series of headlining shows this summer, including UK festival Reading and Leeds and the upcoming Electric Picnic.

The Killers recently brought in some heat after a show in Georgia took a turn. The band invited a fan up onto the stage, as they do at almost every show when they found out the fan was Russian. Flowers was booed after asking the crowd if they were "OK with a Russian coming up" onstage, some seeing his words as Flowers taking a pro-Russian occupation stance.

In a statement later posted to social media, The Killers apologised for their naive attempt at international relations. “We recognize that a comment, meant to suggest that all of the Killers’ audience and fans are ‘brothers and sisters’ could be misconstrued. We did not mean to upset anyone and we apologize."

The Killers are set to play a highly anticipated headlining show at this weekend's Electric Picnic in Co. Laois. They join co-headliners Niall Horan, Billie Eilish, Paolo Nutini and The Script.
